On October 17, sunshine poured onto the platform of Jakarta's Halim Railway Station, where a red-and-white "Whoosh" EMU, the nickname for the Jakarta-Bandung High Speed Railway, stood quietly in place. On this day, the 142.3-kilometer railway linking Indonesia's capital Jakarta with Bandung, the capital of West Java Province, marked its second anniversary of operation. With a maximum speed of 350 km/h, it is not only Indonesia's first high-speed railway but also a symbolic gateway ushering Southeast Asia into the high-speed rail era.
Over the past two years, the Jakarta-Bandung High Speed Railway has achieved impressive results: more than 12 million passengers carried, EMUs covering over 5.65 million kilometers safely, and a single-day record of 26,700 passengers. Behind these figures lie the transformation of local travel habits, the surge of regional economic vitality, and the reshaping of Southeast Asia's transport landscape. Looking ahead, the railway will continue to optimize its services and evolve from a single line into a connected network. Future extensions to Surabaya and links to Indonesia's new capital Nusantara will build upon the Jakarta-Bandung experience, expanding its influence across the archipelago. Beyond its transport significance, the railway has become a symbol of China-Indonesia cooperation, a landmark Belt and Road project, and a bridge for regional connectivity. As "Whoosh" continues to race ahead, it is set to write an even more magnificent chapter on the soil of Indonesia and Southeast Asia.
