CR450 EMU Train Prototype Unveiled in Beijing on December 29

Building High-Level Self-Reliance and Strength in Railway Science and Technology, and Consolidating and Boosting China’s Leading Edge in High Speed Railway Technology

   According to China State Railway Group Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as CR), the CR450 EMU train prototype was unveiled in Beijing on December 29. This marks a major breakthrough in the “CR450 Science and Technology Innovation Project”, and will greatly enhance China’s railway science and technology innovation, self-reliance and strength, and further consolidate and boost China’s leading edge in high speed railway (HSR) technology globally.

  CR’s Department of Science, Technology and Information Technology said that since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, under the strong leadership of the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core, CR has firmly adhered to the path of independent innovation. It has independently developed a series of scientific and technological innovation products, represented by the Fuxing EMUs, and established a complete set of HSR technology system encompassing three major fields of HSR engineering construction, equipment manufacturing and operations management. China’s HSR has taken a historic leap, shifting from a follower to a front-runner, and its HSR technology has set an international benchmark. To further consolidate and boost China’s leading edge in HSR technology, and better serve and support the Chinese modernization, CR has thoroughly implemented the guiding principles of the important instructions of General Secretary Xi Jinping on scientific and technological innovation and railway work, and implemented the national strategy of innovation-driven development and the “14th Five-Year Plan”. With the strong support of the relevant ministries and organizations of the country, CR has given full play to the advantages of the new system for mobilizing resources nationwide to make key technological breakthroughs and its role as the leading enterprise in railway scientific and technological innovation. It has taken the lead in pooling domestic research institutes, universities, enterprises and other outstanding scientific research resources to establish an innovative team that jointly tackles key technological challenges. Since 2018, it has explored the “uncharted territory” of 400 km/h commercial operation technology, studying the basic theories and key technologies under 400 km/h conditions, and did a lot of work in building technological capabilities and in technical validation. In 2021, the “CR450 Science and Technology Innovation Project” was officially launched to develop the 400 km/h CR450 EMU train and the complete high speed railway infrastructure technology. In 2022, the CR450 EMU train’s general technical specifications were released, and relevant parametric tests and massive simulation calculations were carried out for the R&D of the trains. From 2022 to 2023, new technical component replacement tests for the CR450 EMU trains were carried out on the Mile-Mengzi HSR and Fuzhou-Xiamen HSR, verifying key new technologies and component performance. In 2024, the production of the train prototype officially began, and the successful rollout of the CR450 EMU train prototype is enabled by applying extensive intelligent manufacturing technologies and stringent quality control.

  According to the introduction, the CR450 EMU train prototype’s operational speed, energy consumption during operation, noise levels inside the train, and braking distance, among other indicators, are internationally advanced. First, it’s faster. The train boasts a test speed of 450 km/h, and an operation speed of 400 km/h. Once in commercial service, it will further reduce travel time, making travel more convenient and efficient for passengers. Second, it’s safer. The train has a shorter braking distance and more stable performance in operation, and in other words it maintains a similar braking distance at higher operation speeds. Third, it’s more energy-efficient. The train’s overall running resistance is 22% lower, and its weight is 10% lighter. Fourth, it’s more comfortable. With higher comfort level, the train’s interior noise is 2 decibels lower, and its service space in the passenger coach is 4% larger, providing more diverse, convenient, and personalized passenger services and better riding experience. Fifth, it’s more intelligent. The train operation and control, intelligent driver interaction, safety monitoring, and intelligent passenger services, etc. have all been comprehensively upgraded.

  The CR450 EMU train is a vivid practice of China’s innovation-driven development strategy, a comprehensive display of the country’s scientific and technological innovation and high-end equipment manufacturing strength, and a testament to the advantages of the system of socialism. It is significant for building China’s high-level self-reliance and strength in railway science and technology, promoting the development of new quality productive forces in the railway sector with scientific and technological innovation, and building a modernized railway industrial system. Looking ahead, CR will conduct a series of running tests and evaluations on the CR450 EMU train prototype to further assess its performance, continuously optimize its technical indicators, and strive for its sooner commercial operation to better serve the public’s travel needs.
