Railway Passenger Traffic Soars in Volume and Quality, "Mobile China" Full of Vitality

National Annual Railway Passenger Traffic Breaks 4 Billion for the First Time

According to CR, from January to November this year, China's railways have transported a total of 4.008 billion passengers, marking the first time annual passenger traffic has surpassed the 4 billion mark, setting a new historical record. China continues to lead the world in key passenger transport metric, including railway passenger volume and passenger turnover.

A relevant official from CR's Passenger Transport Department shared that the company has actively implemented the decisions and policies of the Communist Party of China and the State Council. Adhering to a people-centered development approach, CR is accelerating the construction of a modern railway transport service system. With a focus on meeting the public's desire for a better travel experience, CR continues to leverage the well-developed high-speed rail network and modern railway infrastructure. By improving railway passenger service capacity and quality, it has effectively supported safe, orderly and comfortable travel for the public, while contributing to the stable operation of the national economy. This has injected strong momentum into the thriving development of "Mobile China."

The benefits of a developed railway network have been released to continuously improve passenger transport capacity. This year, new high-speed railways such as the Chizhou-Huangshan High Speed Railway and the Zhongchuan Airport-Wuweidong section of the Lanzhou-Zhangye High Speed Railway have been successfully put into operation. As a result, the modern railway network has become denser. The total operating mileage of China's railways has exceeded 160,000 kilometers, with more than 46,000 kilometers of high-speed rail lines. More than 3,300 railway passenger stations have been built and put into use, including over 1,300 high-speed railway stations. The railway network now covers 99% of cities with populations of over 200,000 and 97% of cities with populations of over 500,000. Cities like Wuwei and Zhaoyuan have now entered the high-speed railway era. The significant leap in the scale and quality of the railway network, particularly the high-speed rail network, has expanded railway passenger capacity and improved accessibility and coverage. The Fuxing EMU train now travels across the vast land of China, providing strong support for personnel movement, industrial connections and economic interaction along the routes. From January to November, China's railways transported a record-breaking 4.008 billion passengers, setting a new historical high. The railway passenger turnover reached 1.492701 trillion passenger-kilometers, accounting for nearly 50% of the total social passenger turnover, further highlighting the backbone role of railways in passenger transport.

The line and equipment resources have been optimized, with increasingly diverse passenger services. To better meet passenger travel demands, CR has promoted supply-side structural reforms in railway transportation. By efficiently utilizing line, station and equipment resources, CR has developed a full range of passenger train products, including different speed levels, a complement of high and normal-speed trains and a rich variety of well-supplied services. The Fuxing EMU train, with a maximum operating speed of 350 kilometers per hour, provides passengers with diversified travel options. Leveraging big data from the 12306 system, CR has scientifically analyzed passenger travel patterns and dynamically optimized train schedules. Additional capacity is provided on popular routes or lines, ensuring an accurate match between transport capacity and passenger demand, making travel more convenient. Furthermore, CR has actively supported the tourism economy and the silver economy by creating popular tourist train brands like the "Silk Road Dream Enjoyment Train" and "Panda Express," which have been well-received by the market.

The station and train services have been improved to enhance passenger travel experience. CR has introduced the 2024 edition of the China National Railway Group Railway Passenger Transport Regulations, along with a series of new measures aimed at benefiting and improving convenience for passengers. The 12306 system has innovated by launching features such as same-train connections and online seat selection. It has also introduced fully digitalized electronic ticket invoices and expanded coverage for ticket types, including 60 routes for "multi-ride tickets" and "commuter passes," as well as 11 routes for tourist package tickets. The Railway Travel QR Code now covers all high-speed trains. Additionally, 120 stations across the country offer convenient transfers, 31 stations allow passengers arriving by train to take the subway without security checks, 84 stations provide online meal ordering services, and 92 trains now feature "quiet carriages." Special services for priority passengers, such as seniors, children, disabled individuals and pregnant women, have also been optimized to ensure a more comfortable and convenient travel experience. Furthermore, there is an active campaign promoting civil travel behavior, creating a warm and comfortable travel environment for all.

The economic and social development has been promoted to strongly support "Mobile China." With continuous improvements in both capacity and service quality, China's railway network has significantly enhanced the travel conditions for the public, contributing to economic and social development. The vast high-speed rail network has reduced time and distance, promoting integrated development in regions such as the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, Yangtze River Delta and Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. It has generated the "same-city effect," accelerating the flow of people, goods, capital and information, and supporting regional development. The railway system continues to operate public-benefit "slow trains" and rural revitalization services, improving the inclusiveness, balance and accessibility of passenger services, thereby helping communities along the routes enjoy convenient travel and increased income. Additionally, the railway has been actively promoting the integration of rail and tourism, collaborating with scenic spots and hotels to create new consumption experiences and high-quality travel routes. These efforts have attracted a large number of passengers and boosted the tourism economy. In 2024, the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong High Speed Railway handled 24.345 million cross-boundary passengers, marking a 37.2% increase year-on-year, while the China-Laos Railway transported 249,000 cross-border passengers, supporting cultural exchanges and business cooperation.

Looking ahead, the official stated that CR will closely monitor changes in passenger demand, take advantage of newly opened routes, stations and equipment resources by the end of the year, optimize train schedules, and make preparations for the 2025 Spring Festival travel rush. Continuous improvements to station and train services will ensure safe, orderly and comfortable travel for the vast number of passengers.
