“Road to Rail”: A New Model for Low-Carbon Intermodal Transportation of Steam Coal

      On November 14, a container train loaded with 1,024 tons of steam coal slowly departed from Dongshengxi Railway Station, passing through Baotouxi Railway Station and heading to Baiyunebo Railway Station, to replenish fuel reserves for Baogang Group Baoshan Mining Co., Ltd.’s thermal power operations. This specialized train is another achievement in the implementation of the green development concept by CR-Huhhot, further promoting the “Road to Rail” project.

  Traditionally, the steam coal used by the Group was transported in bulk by trucks, leading to high transportation costs, unsustainable supply, and severe coal dust pollution. In an effort to consistently implement the green development concept and expand the “Road to Rail” freight volume, CR-Huhhot promoted the relocation of service ports. Specifically, they established dedicated service teams, publicized the advantages of railway transportation, and organized marketing personnel to visit and survey enterprises. They also explored the potential of container multimodal transport, scientifically formulated steam coal transportation plans, and deepened cooperation with Inner Mongolia BaoTou Steel Union Co., Ltd.’s Manufacturing Department and the logistics of Baoshan’s mining companies, ultimately facilitating the launch of the steam coal container train.

  To ensure the smooth operation of the steam coal container train, CR-Huhhot focused on accelerating the adjustment of the transportation structure based on practical needs, dynamically allocated existing transportation capacity, and reasonably arranged shunting operation plans. Fully leveraging the role of the Baotou West marshaling yard as a regional hub, CR-Huhhot worked to create an internal transportation channel along the Baotou-Baiyunebo Railway. The steam coal container train was assembled at Dongshengxi Railway Station, reconfigured at Baotouxi Railway Station’s Baotou North operating area, and finally operated at Baiyunebo Railway Station according to the small operational cycle. Throughout the transport process, they continuously strengthened key link operations such as loading and unloading, vehicle disassembly, and reorganization. They prioritized clearing the line and disassembling the train, and prioritized organizing operations to ensure the safety and efficiency of the steam coal container train transportation.

  The “containerization” transportation has opened a new model for low-carbon intermodal transportation of steam coal. Under this new model, the transportation of steam coal becomes more economical, environmentally friendly, and efficient. The use of containerized transportation for steam coal almost doesn’t generate coal dust, avoiding environmental pollution caused by bulk transportation. Mechanized loading ensures safe and efficient loading of goods, reducing damage and loss of goods caused by manual loading, unloading, and handling in traditional transportation methods and shortening the time goods stay idle. Relying on the safety and efficiency of railway transportation, it reduces the damage of goods caused by adverse weather and road conditions in traditional transportation modes, compressing the transportation time of goods by more than 35%. The transportation cost is also more advantageous; according to a comprehensive cost calculation, compared to bulk transportation by trucks, each ton of steam coal can save transportation costs by 18 yuan. In the half-month since the start of this low-carbon intermodal transportation model, it has saved transportation costs of 166,000 yuan for Baogang Group.
