On June 25, 2021, Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway – the first electrified railway in Tibet Autonomous Region – connected southeastern Tibet by rail since inauguration, enabling the plateau diesel-electric dual-source Fuxing bullet trains to run on Himalayas. The past year witnessed the constant operation stability and transport quality upgrade on the line. First, passengers enjoy convenient and efficient travelling on Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway. Four bullet trains and two conventional Z series express trains are scheduled each day between Lhasa and Nyingchi, and two bullet trains between Shigatse and Nyingchi, with a peak daily ridership of more than 4.3K passengers, greatly facilitating travelling along the line. Second, this line strongly supports cargo transport. 47.8K tons of goods were transported in total. Local specialties such as Tibetan matsutake, and local chicken and pigs are transported to other parts of the country and various production and living supplies such as building materials, grain, potash fertilizer and food are transported during backhaul, greatly supporting the local economic development and people’s livelihood. Third, service quality keeps upgrading for customers. CHINA RAILWAY assigned 75 Tibetan employees to work on Lhasa-Lhasa Railway, and recruited more than 400 local residents of ethnic groups to work for passenger and freight transport along the line. For passenger transport improvement, under the strict epidemic control, the service brand of “Galsang Flowers Nourished by Plateau Railway” represents national unity enhanced by railway connection, offering convenient services such as the multi-ride tickets, Tibetan-Chinese bilingual services, and accessible services for key passengers. The freight container transport service was launched with optimized freight transport procedures, offering convenience to enterprise customers. Fourth, the operation management capability was continuously enhanced. CR established Lhasa Rolling Stock Servicing Center and selected 43 professional technicians from inland regional railway administrations groups to provide support. They improved operation and maintenance rules and regulations, actively explored new operation and maintenance modes of plateau railways, and created the integrated safety system (i.e., the safety of people, for items, and by technology).
The “three-hour economic circle” among Lhasa, Nyingchi and other cities is formed initially by Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway, strengthening people’s movement and economic and trade cooperation between the southeastern hinterland of Tibet and the inland of China with shorter travel durations between major cities in the region, fostering the prosperity in Tibet and for Tibetan people. Tibetan people now prefer travelling by rail in Tibet, as railways are a safe, green, convenient and comfortable transport solution. Such momentum stimulates broader popularity of the “Peach Blossom Festival” in Nyingchi and travelling to the tourist attractions such as Yamdrok Lake and Namjagbrawa Peak, activating rural economic development in agriculture and animal husbandry, homestay hotel and agritainment. For the period from July 2021 to the end of May 2022, Nyingchi received a total of 7.54 million domestic and foreign tourists, creating tourism revenue up to 6.5 billion yuan totally, including more than 82 million yuan from family hotels run by farmers and herdsmen.
