On August 1, 2008, the Beijing-Tianjin Intercity Railway, China's first high-speed railway designed for a speed of 350 kilometers per hour, officially opened for operation. Over the past 18 years, the number of daily train services has increased from 47 pairs to 123 pairs, while daily passenger volume has risen from 49,000 to 220,000 trips. The railway has transported more than 570 million passenger trips in total. Its high-frequency, public-transit-style operations continue to bring Beijing and Tianjin closer together, providing greater convenience for commuting, family visits and leisurely travel between the two cities.
