Strong Growth Momentum in National Railway Passenger and Freight Volume in Q1

 

                               

       In the first quarter of this year, passenger rail transport in China maintained high volumes while freight transport exhibited strong growth momentum, effectively serving the safe, orderly and comfortable travel of the public and supporting high-quality economic and social development.

  On the passenger side, railway authorities continued optimizing the supply of passenger transport products and strengthened transport organization and supervision during peak travel periods such as New Year and the Spring Festival travel rush. In the first quarter, passengers originated nationwide reached 1.133 billion, up 5.5% year-on-year and a record high for the same period; passenger turnover reached 414.683 billion passenger-kilometers, up 3.2%. In March alone, passengers originated hit 376 million, up 11.7% year-on-year, and passenger turnover reached 130.582 billion passenger-kilometers, up 16.5%.

  On the freight side, in the first quarter, freight tonnage originated nationwide reached 1.281 billion tons, up 2.2% year-on-year; freight turnover reached 907.198 billion ton-kilometers, up 5.1%. In March, freight tonnage originated stood at 460 million tons, up 3.4%, and freight turnover reached 334.267 billion ton-kilometers, up 6.9%. By category, the railway transported 681 million tons of coal, 256 million tons of containerized cargo, and 15.28 million tons of grain, up 1.7%, 10.7% and 11.3% respectively.

  In terms of fixed-asset investment, railway fixed-asset investment completed in the first quarter reached 137.9 billion yuan, up 5.1% year-on-year. The steady growth of railway construction investment marks a good start for the whole year.
