To better meet passengers' needs for traveling with pets, the railway authorities have expanded the pilot program for pet transportation services on high-speed trains starting June 20, 2025. The service now covers 25 stations and 38 EMU trains across eight major high-speed rail lines including Beijing-Shanghai High Speed Railway, Beijing-Guangzhou Railway, Beijing-Harbin High Speed Railway and Shanghai-Kunming Railway. Passengers may transport one healthy, domesticated cat or dog per trip weighing no more than 15 kilograms and with a shoulder height not exceeding 40 centimeters, accompanying them on the same train.
The railway sector has been steadily advancing supply-side structural reforms in transportation, actively adapting to the diverse travel needs of passengers. Since April 8, 2025, the railway authorities began piloting "isolated transportation, separate passengers and pets, and dedicated care" services on 10 trains across five stations on the Beijing-Shanghai High Speed Railway, achieving smooth operations and positive market feedback. Building on the pilot's success, the program scope has been extended to cover key segments of the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway, Beijing-Harbin High Speed Railway and Shanghai-Kunming Railway since June 6. Newly added stations include Beijing West Railway Station, Zhengzhouxi Railway Station, Wuhan Railway Station, Changshanan Railway Station, Guangzhounan Railway Station, Shenzhenbei Railway Station, Shenyangbei Railway Station, Dalianbei Railway Station, Harbinxi Railway Station, Xi'anbei Railway Station, Chengdudong Railway Station, Qingdao Railway Station, among others. Additional trains covered include G335, G1377, G491/492, G935, G1591 and G208. With this expansion, the service now spans 25 stations and 38 trains on eight major high-speed rail lines including Beijing-Shanghai High Speed Railway, Beijing-Guangzhou Railway, Beijing-Harbin High Speed Railway and Shanghai-Kunming Railway.
Following the expansion, the pet transportation service continues to operate under the principle of "passenger and pet depart and arrive together," with no changes to booking methods, processing procedures, service points, or pricing standards. Passengers can use the "Pet Transportation" feature on the official 12306 railway app to check eligible trains, purchase tickets, and make online reservations for transporting pets on the same train. Upon successful reservation, passengers must bring their pet along with a valid ID and an Animal Quarantine Certificate to the designated China Railway Express operating department at the departure station to complete the transport procedures before boarding. Upon arrival, pets can be picked up following SMS or phone notifications. To address the challenges posed by hot summer weather, the railway authorities will enhance disinfection and cleaning of high-speed express cabinets and pet carriers, strengthen safety controls throughout the process, and continue improving the quality of pet transportation services on high-speed trains.
