Opening Up Creates a New Frontier: Inland Areas Move to the Forefront

As of now, CRE trains (Xi'an) have exceeded 30,000 services, accounting for more than one-quarter of the national total. On average, a CRE train departs from or arrives in Xi'an every 80 minutes.

With site planning, routing, network building and layout all advancing steadily, the construction of the Xi'an assembly hub for CRE trains is progressing in an orderly manner. Serving as a logistics hub for China's westward opening-up, the hub has become a crucial platform for Xi'an to integrate deeply into the broader Belt and Road framework. The Eurasian Land-Sea Trade Corridor and the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor intersect in Xi'an, essentially forming a modern logistics system that faces Eurasia and connects with the globe.

Jointly building connectivity ensures smooth cargo flows between Asia and Europe. In November 2023, the first CRE train departed from Xi'an to Baku, reaching Baku Port in only 12 days. At present, the Xi'an assembly hub has opened 18 international trunk routes covering the entire Eurasian continent, along with 26 domestic routes connecting major domestic sources of cargo.

Digital and intelligent technologies have greatly enhanced operating efficiency. Through the establishment of a comprehensive service platform for CRE trains, critical documents can be shared via the cloud, significantly reducing waiting times for transshipment at border ports. Digitalization has boosted train operating efficiency by more than 30 percent and cut overall costs by over 15 percent, driving a 275 percent year-on-year increase in container shipments toward Central Asia in the first half of the year.

Enhanced services enable companies and trains to grow together. CRE trains now run directly into industrial parks, dramatically reducing transport costs. China and Kazakhstan have both established international terminals, improving their ability to consolidate and distribute goods. To date, a total of 534 scheduled CRE trains (Xi'an) have been operated.
