On November 29, the International Union of Railways (UIC) announced the winners of the first TrainRail hackathon at its headquarters in Paris. The team Evergreen from China Railway Guangzhou Group Co., Ltd. won the second prize for inventing a new foldable railway container to face rising transfer ratios.

The transfer ratio of outbound international trains to inbound has now risen to 1:3, which means with every three containers sent to Europe, only one will return with cargo. Empty containers are overstocked in Europe, and the transport capacity for returning the containers cannot meet the demand. As a result, the rental fee for containers will double or even triple.

To solve these problems, Keyi Li, Ruifan Luo, Yue Feng, Yuqing Zhang, and Danyu Wang from the Team Evergreen designed a new foldable container featuring the mortise and tenon technique to expand capacity for returning containers and cut rental costs. They showcased the spirit of innovation and China Railway’s aspiration to contribute to the UNSDGs.

A total of seven teams from different regions participated in the UIC Final TrainRail Hackathon, presented their projects, and answered the jurys questions. They had achieved the objective of the Hackathon, which was to mobilize talents to work together, brainstorm, collaborate and help create a sustainable world.
