Railway design is extremely challenging, as designers must find the optimal solution under multiple constraints, with various factors put into consideration, such as natural environment and socio-economic development. In 2015, Zhao Dou led his team to complete the feasibility study of the Jakarta-Bandung High Speed Railway with high quality. Subsequently, he also led the survey and design of the railway and tailored technical solutions. During the project construction process, Zhao visited the site over 30 times to carefully inspect the actual situation.

"To reflect the level of China's high speed railway, designers must be practical and adapt to local conditions," this is a sentence Zhao Dou often says to team members. Based on a comprehensive understanding of the local situation, the Jakarta-Bandung High Speed Railway design team continuously improved the design scheme. Subsequently, Zhao Dou led the team to develop a suitable simply supported box girder for the Jakarta-Bandung High Speed Railway, optimizing bridge structures and pier dimensions. Now, as the Jakarta-Bandung High Speed Railway became the first high speed railway in Southeast Asia, Zhao Dou has led his design team to polish the "national business card" of the high speed railway with their actions.

During Zhao Dou's more than three decades of railway design career, he has participated in many groundbreaking projects such as China's first 350 km/h high speed railway, the first modern comprehensive transportation hub, and the first 30-ton axle load heavy-duty railway. The list goes on and on, as Zhao Dou said: "What we surpass is not others, but ourselves."
