On June 20, the Heping Tunnel on China-Laos (Kunming-Vientiane) Railway was successfully holed through. So far, 69 of 93 tunnels on the railway have been completed, laying a foundation for the completion of track laying, communication, signaling, electricity and electrification works, station buildings and opening-to-traffic of the whole railway on schedule.

Heping Tunnel is located in Ning’er Hani and Yi Autonomous County, Pu'er City, Yunnan Province, with a total length of 8.84 km, passing through 4 faults with the loose and broken surrounding rock. In addition, with abundant rainfall locally, ground surface infiltration has intensified the water enrichment in the tunnel, making the construction more difficult.

The forest coverage rate of Ning’er County where Heping Tunnel is located is 74%. During the 4-year construction, the builders have occupied 50 mu less land by relocating the access roads, and reforested 270 mu of slopes, thus protecting the local environment. In the past, Ning’er County is an important export corridor for Pu'er tea in Yunnan, with many ancient tea-horse roads and post stations in the territory. Nowadays, with the construction of China-Laos Railway speeded up, the ancient road and the new railway are gradually meeting there. Tian Jiamei, a villager from the Minzhu Village of Ning’er Town who lives next to the Heping Tunnel and works on the railway construction site, is full of expectations for the opening-to-traffic of the railway: "After the railway opens to traffic, the tea, sweet potatoes and melons we planted can be sold to other places by train and earn us a good price!"
