On December 30, Beijing-Zhangjiakou HSR opened to traffic, and Chongli Railway was completed and put into operation in parallel, which will help the integrated and coordinated development of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and provide transportation service guarantee for 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

Beijing-Zhangjiakou HSR is an important component of Beijing-Lanzhou corridor in the HSR network of "eight north-south lines and eight east-west lines" specified in China's Mid-and-Long-Term Railway Network Plan. The HSR is connected to the west with the Zhangjiakou-Hohhot HSR and Zhangjiakou-Datong HSR which opened on the same day, and to the east with the Beijing terminal, forming a fast transport corridor for passengers heading to Beijing from eastern Inner Mongolia, Shanxi and northern Hebei.

Beijing-Zhangjiakou HSR starts from Beijing North Station, a railway terminal in Beijing, passes through Changping District and Yanqing District of Beijing, and reaches Huailai County, Xiahuayuan District, Xuanhua District and Qiaodong District of Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province. With a total length of 174 km and a maximum design speed of 350 km/h, the HSR is set with ten stations, including Beijing North Station, Qinghe Station, Shahe Station (no passenger service), Changping Station, Badaling Great Wall Station, Donghuayuan North Station, Huailai Station, Xiahuayuan North Station, Xuanhua North Station and Zhangjiakou Station.

Chongli Railway is a branch line of Beijing-Zhangjiakou HSR. It is planned to further extend to Xilinhot, Inner Mongolia, and serve the travel of residents and the development of tourism resources in Chongli District, as well as the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. The railway is led from Beijing-Zhangjiakou HSR at Xiahuayuan North Station, and ends at the Taizicheng Olympic Village in Chongli District (set with Taizicheng Station). It has a total length of 53 km and a design speed of 250 km/h.

In the initial operation period of the Beijing-Zhangjiakou HSR and Chongli Railway, 36 pairs of regular EMU trains and 6 pairs of peak day EMU trains will be operated by the railway sector. The intelligent Beijing-Zhangjiakou HSR experience trains are now operated between Beijing and Taizicheng, and will later extend to lines between Beijing and Zhangjiakou, Hohhot and Datong. The shortest traveling time between Zhangjiakou and Beijing will be reduced from the current 3 hours and 7 minutes to 47 minutes, the traveling time between Hohhot and Beijing will be reduced from the current 9 hours and 15 minutes to 2 hours and 9 minutes, and the traveling time between Datong and Beijing will be reduced to 1 hour and 42 minutes.

Using the "Fuxing" intelligent EMU trains with a speed of 350 km/h, the intelligent Beijing-Zhangjiakou HSR experience train has a shortest running time between Beijing North Station and Taizicheng Station of 1 hour and 04 minutes, and a shortest running time between Qinghe Station and Taizicheng Station of 50 minutes. The railway sector will extensively listen to the opinions and suggestions through questionnaire surveys on the passenger experiences, continuously explore laws and accumulate experiences, optimize various services and equipment functions in a timely manner, and continuously improve the operation quality to prepare for serving the Winter Olympics.

Before Beijing-Zhangjiakou HSR and Chongli Railway were put into operation, CHINA RAILWAY had carefully organized relevant units to strictly implement various regulations and standards, conduct integrated commissioning & test, inspection, acceptance and safety assessment on various discipline equipment, and comprehensively optimize and adjust the track status, pantograph-contact wire performance, train control, and communication & signaling system, ensuring that the railways can meet the requirements for safe and stable operation, and can meet the requirements for commercial operation.

Since the construction began in December 2015, the railway sector has adhered to the construction concepts of intelligence, green, high-quality and human-orientation. In accordance with the goal of building the high-quality project and creating the brand of intelligent Beijing-Zhangjiakou HSR, it has organized advantageous strengths, integrated and utilized the successful practices in China's HSR construction, and actively promoted management innovation and scientific & technological innovation in combination with the characteristics of Beijing-Zhangjiakou HSR project. It has built the Badaling Great Wall Station with the world's largest burial depth of 102 meters and the largest underground construction covering an area of 41,000 square meters. For the first time in the world, the "Fuxing" intelligent EMU train has realized the automatic operation at 350 km/h, further consolidating and improving China's leading edge in HSR.
